M7161 Do You Believe In Magic?
I found this dress in an enchanted village, next county over. Just kidding, I made it. Using magic. You guys, where did July go??!! I mean, WHOA, right? I had every intention of finishing and posting this dress in July, but I ended up having a crazy busy month. My brother came to visit me in Bellingham; my best friend got married in Chicago; and I turned 29 somewhere in between (late July Leo, in case you were wondering). I was working on this dress at the same time as my Maid of Honor dress, and obviously that took precedence. So here I am, tardy but ready to play :)
I am completely besotted with this dress. It seems like I've been looking for the perfect maxi dress for years, and the only way for me to have it was, of course, to make it. I am really impressed with this pattern- the shape, the fit, and the lines. Just really a satisfying make for me. It doesn't hurt that I used an equally obsession-worthy fabric- a dreamy, flowy, rayon that I picked up in Vancouver with the idea of just such a dress in mind... I didn't take time or waste any fabric trying to pattern-match. After taking tons of pictures, I realized it really doesn't matter about the pattern-match (for this dress). I am truly proud of it.
I made a couple adjustments to the dress. One was a weird armpit adjustment I've noticed I typically have to make with McCall's patterns. Basically the armpits stick out about an inch from my rib cage on either side. I fixed it on this dress by just bringing the armpits in on the sides, but from what I've read online and in fit-books this is a bust adjustment in disguise, which I've really been trying to avoid doing. One day I will get so annoyed that I will force myself to figure it out. This dress is loose-fitting enough that my method worked out fine...
This was one of our more enjoyable photo-shoots as well. We went to one of the tiny, hidden beaches off Bellingham Bay around sunset to take these pictures. I took too long getting ready (welcome to Amy 101), and the light was fading fast. A lot of these pictures are darker and fuzzier than I would like, but I still think they are completely beguiling. We probably could have benefited from using a tripod for these shots, which I now have thanks to a generous benefactor, and I may begin utilizing tripod/remote method for pictures, to help obtain clearer, more in-focus shots.
Keith requested this pose:
And this one is dark but I really like the way it turned out, like we did it on purpose?
