Hearts For Linden

Oh hello, Blogosphere! Have you missed me while I was away?? This is going to sound a lot like an excuse because it is an excuse, but I'm going to give it to you anyway: I really, really meant to post last month and thought I would up to the very last second when after taking dozens of photos of the dress I had made styled two different ways, I realized I just wasn't that proud of it, and didn't really want to show it to anyone. As much as failed projects are a let-down, this one was also a huge learning experience for me. Here's a quick run down of what I was learning in October: how to make pleats, using the right needle and tension, listening to the pattern guidelines for fabric, cutting the right size, and to never, never make patterns featuring an elastic waistband (because I am just not a fan, and the finished project will inevitably disappoint me). So that's what I was doing in October. This month I turned my eyes towards the much beloved, much lauded Li...

Tee Shirt Dress / M6886

Image
Hello and Good Day! I hope this post finds you well. I know it's been a while since my last post, and as much as I'd like to post more frequently, I just don't have the lightning seamstress touch some of the more talented/practiced makers seem to enjoy. I promise I will work on getting there (this is more a promise to myself than to you, dear reader). Onto the good stuff! I made a tee shirt dress out of McCall's M6886. I was looking for a quick and gratifying make while I waited for some fabric to arrive for another project. This pattern, at just 4 pieces, definitely fit the bill. It's literally a front piece, back piece, and two sleeve pieces. How delightfully straight-forward, yes? I made no alterations to this, and it fits well! Heaven be praised! This did end up taking me a wee bit longer than expected because I was struggling to put a rolled hem on the curved neckline, which the pattern called for. After reading a bit about rolled hems, I came to the...

A Floral Beginning/ Butterick B5919

Image
Greetings, friends and sewers! I'm Amy, and this is my sewing blog. Thanks for stopping by! This post is about the making of B5919. I chose this pattern for its vintage feel & fun embellishments (open back- check! giant bow- check!). I made up this dress as a project for a sewing class I've been taking, and so cannot take full credit for the pattern alterations we made (I had a seasoned designer guiding my hand). Also, this pattern is labeled 'easy' but I did not find it to be. Obviously, 'easy' is relative to your sewing level, and this was the most advanced garment I've made yet. My biggest struggle was probably with the silk lining I used- very slippery & hard to get just right. I also had no idea how much hand sewing goes into attaching a lining to a garment, and I seem to enjoy hand sewing about as much as I enjoy bathing my cat. Buuuut, my sewing skills improved tremendously as a result of this project, and I don't think sewing a dress...
